Colt gun values by serial number1/16/2024 In 1955 Colt introduced another iconic pistol, the Colt Python. The business thrived with three factories and around the clock shifts producing firearms for the United States Army. World War II saw Colt manufacture some 629,000 M1911 pistols for the war effort. Browning designed the M1900 semi-automatic pistol that eventually became the world-famous M1911 that is still being manufactured by Colt and a plethora of other manufacturers today. Samuel Colt died in January 1862 at the age of just 47.ĭuring World War I, John Browning worked for Colt. This success led to the 1855 founding of Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company.ĭuring the American Civil War, Colt sold weapons almost exclusively to the Union army, refusing to do any business with the Confederate States. Walker in 1847 to create and deliver the landmark Colt Walker Revolver. Sales were slow, and the business languished.ĭuring the Mexican War, in 1846, the United States Government ordered 1,000 of Colt’s revolvers. At that time, Colt started a company to manufacture this revolver. But the story begins before that in 1836 when Samuel Colt received a United States patent for a revolver mechanism that allowed firing multiple times before reloading. Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, now known as Colt's Manufacturing Company, LLC (or just Colt), was founded in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1855.
